We’re gearing up for an egg-splosion in Butler County, for the Easter season is upon us.
You’re going to be seeing lot of Easter Bunny picture opportunities and egg hunts in the paragraphs below, so prepare yourself.
It always was a mystery to me why eggs and bunnies are lumped together once a year. Sure, the two are what ancients used to represent rebirth and the coming of spring, but as a kid it was confusing. Bunnies don’t lay eggs!
Nonetheless, exploring the symbols of Easter for this column has been a trip. According to the History Channel, most pagan Easter traditions originated with German settlers who came to Pennsylvania with tales of a bunny that laid colored eggs. Who knew, right?
Sorry to fall down a rabbit hole, but a little farther down, you’ll find this weekend’s events.
At the closing concert for Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s season, conductor Matthew Kraemer will be honored and several awards will be presented. Purchase tickets for “The Golden Age of Hollywood” online at butlersymphony.org or call the office at 724-283-1402. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.
Spend an evening with Moon Doh, assistant conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at the Zelienople Public Library, 227 S. High St. Learn of his experiences in South Korea, Russia and the Philippines during his free talk.
At 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, enjoy a flashlight Easter scavenger hunt at Alameda Park in Odd Fellow Gazebo, 184 Alameda Park Road. The Sing Hosanna! production of “Sister Act” opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Succop Theater on Butler County Community College campus, 107 College Drive, Butler Township. Tickets can be purchased at singhosanna.ticketleap.com.
See Musical Theatre Guild’s production of “Company” Friday, March 31, or Saturday, April 1, at the William A. Lehnerd Performance Hall and Production Center in Butler Memorial Park. Tickets are available at mtgbutler.org.
Drop by Harmony Laden, 229 Mercer St., to pick up an Egg Hunt Scavenger List between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, April 1. Visit local businesses to find the eggs and receive a prize. The Easter Bunny will be in town from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 2:30 p.m.
The Best Buddies Eggstravaganza features a 5K run, a mile walk and an egg hunt beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Art Bernardi Stadium, 120 Campus Lane.
Later on Saturday, April 1, another event is planned on the Butler Area School District campus. The 20th Annual FAB Showcase will be held at the Butler Intermediate High School.
Egg hunting, prizes, a petting zoo, face painting and food trucks contribute to the Cabot Crusader’s Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 1, in Winfield Township Community Park. Children age 2 and younger will start at 11 a.m., then ages 3 to 12 will follow every half-hour. Bring a nonperishable food item for Cabot United Methodist Church’s food pantry.
The Seven Fields Easter Egg Hunt runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at 380 Castle Creek Drive. Face painting, a magician, crafts and games will add to the festivities.
Another egg hunt will be held at Harmony businesses Saturday. The Easter Bunny is expected to be in town from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 2:30 p.m. Lambs and goats will be at the Weaver’s Cabin from noon to 2 p.m.
This Sunday, April 2, an egg hunt at Preston Park in Butler Township is planned along a decorated Bunny Trail. The first start time is 1 p.m. for age groups 1 to 3 and 4 to 5, and the second start time is 3 p.m. for age groups 6 to 7 and 8 to 10. The event is free, and there is no need to register.
April’s exhibit in the Back Hall Gallery in Cranberry Township Municipal Center, 2525 Rochester Road, features the work of local nature photographer Doris Dumrauf. An artist reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 15.
