As springtime temperatures increase, the state Public Utilities Commission is reminding residents they can prepare for and safely recover from storm-related power outages.

The PUC also advises giving utility crews ample room to work on repairs and to use extra care when traveling, slow down for work crews and watch for work along roads, streets and highways.

Storm preparation tips from the PUC include knowing utility hotline numbers, saving the website addresses of utilities, keeping phones charged and having supplies like batteries, food and medicine on hand.

Tips for those experiencing a power outage include calling utility companies to report outages, staying clear of wires as well as puddles or objects near downed wires, leaving trees and limbs where they are during an outage and not calling 911 to report an outage.

While waiting for power to be restored, residents should use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles, turn off lights and appliances except the refrigerator freezer, use generators safely and check on elderly neighbors.

Those with gas appliances should take special caution during an electrical outage and evacuate if they smell natural gas.
