Signs serve to honor veterans in Callery
CALLERY — Folks driving through the borough may notice some new faces, raised on flags in honor of their service to their country.
Callery has joined towns across the county in honoring area veterans with banners set up around town.
Barbara O'Barto, along with members of her community and church, have already put up five banners across the borough, each bearing pictures and information of two veterans per banner.
“We're actually putting up veteran flags like they have in Evans City and Butler and all over,” she said. “I got together with the mayor in Evans City (Dean Zinkhann) and got the information from him.”
Zinkhann spearheaded the banner project in Evans City and has met with people around the county to help them set up similar projects honoring their communities' veterans.
He told O'Barto how to set up the banners and coordinate the project.
“You have to buy PVC pipe and cut it down and use this really stinky glue that really puts you out there,” O'Barto said.
To collect donations and funds to pay for supplies, O'Barto partnered with Crestview Presbyterian Church as donations had to be made to a nonprofit.
O'Barto said she began talking to people about setting up the banners months ago and has been receiving applications from friends and families of veterans looking for a way to honor them.
“A lot of the ones we have up now, three of them are still living, the other seven have passed on,” she said.
With 10 veterans honored, O'Barto said she's expecting more to come in soon.
