Cases increase against Cranberry Township man for loaning customer vehicles, police say

There are now five cases against a Cranberry Township man accused of driving and renting out his customers’ cars without their permission instead of repairing the vehicles.

With the additional three filings this week, a total of more than 10 cars are involved in the incidents at Oilology in Cranberry, owned by Keith R. Smith, 66.

Charging documents show that a combined total of nearly $11,000 in restitution is being requested from Smith.

In the new incidents, Smith was charged with misdemeanors unauthorized use of motor vehicles, theft and deceptive business practices.

Cranberry Township police said a customer reported that her 2004 Ford F350 truck was taken to Oilology for repairs in July 2022.

As of March 2023, repairs had not been done to the truck, and an additional 5,664 miles were recorded on the vehicle’s odometer.

The customer told police she did not give Smith or anyone else permission to drive the vehicle.

Police said another customer, the owner of a 2014 Dodge Avenger, went to Smith for repairs in October 2022. In December, the customer received two bills for her vehicle being driven on the PA Turnpike on Oct. 22 and Dec. 2 of 2022.

This customer also told police she did not give Smith or anyone else permission to drive her vehicle.

The third case filed Wednesday, April 12, demands $1,420 in restitution for repairs done to a customer’s 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. The customer told police he initially gave Smith the vehicle in June 2022. The vehicle was returned, then taken back in July 2022 for persistent issues.

Part of the restitution includes a state inspection fee, as police said Smith took the vehicle to be inspected.

In October 2022, the customer received an automated work zone speed enforcement violation in the mail for the vehicle in Smith’s possession. The customer said she did not authorize Smith to use her vehicle while it was being repaired.

In the new cases, Smith is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing May 19 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty.

Smith is scheduled to appear Friday, April 14, for preliminary hearings regarding two cases on charges for felony fraud, misdemeanor theft, unauthorized use of motor vehicle and unlawful business practice.
