Passersby helps man from vehicle before it bursts into flames in Oakland Township

A passersby helped a man from his vehicle before it burst into flames following a one-vehicle crash earlier this month, state police said.

The crash occurred around 2:43 a.m. April 2 at the intersection of Route 68 and Valley Vista Lane, Oakland Township.

Police said Austin D. Shay, 24, of Butler, failed to negotiate a left-hand curve in the road while driving his 2017 Subaru Legacy. His vehicle left the roadway and struck a boulder and a utility pole.

A passersby helped Shay from the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames, a crash report showed. Shay was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for injuries. The vehicle was towed.

East Butler Volunteer Fire Department and Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department assisted on scene.
