Genevieve A. Monks

Genevieve A. Monks, 93, of Butler died Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.

Born Sept. 1, 1912 in Pardoe, she was the daughter of Arturo and Carmela Pappalard.

She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, and was part of the first graduating class of the church's school.

She had been a member and officer of the St. Michael's 55 and Alive Club. She also served as president of St. Michael's Council of the Butler Deanery Council of Catholic Women and was a member and officer of St. Michael's Altar Ladies Society.

Mrs. Monks worked for the Girl Scouts of America for 20 years as Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

She was active in the Catholic Daughters of America, and she worked with the junior C.D. of A Drum and Bugle Corps.

For 15 years she was a Democratic committeewoman.

Surviving her are one son, Adam Monks and his wife, Marianne, of Gibsonia; two daughters, Carol Jean Knotick and her husband, Ray, of Butler and Carmel Balderson and her husband, Jack, of Aliquippa; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Marnic of Butler, Curt Knotick of Butler, Cindy Pecora of Wexford, Debbie Birosik of Mars, Mark Balderson of Fairfax, Va., Keith Balderson of California, Md., and Jeff Balderson of Sachse, Texas; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Monks, to whom she was married to for 65 years and who died on Dec. 25, 2000; a grandson, Eric Knotick; two brothers, Adam Pappalard and Silvio Pappalard, and two sisters, Della Grecco and Mary Catalano.

MONKS — Friends of Genevieve A. Monks, who died on Thursday, March 2, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at theMARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 429 Center Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. James Dolan, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Michael's Cemetery.The Bereavement Group of St. Michael the Archangel Church will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church to conduct a scriptural wake service.
