Butler Senior High School still under construction; admins plan for testing

At the beginning of 2023, the new wing of classrooms at Butler Senior High School was expected to be completed by April 1, which would allow the school to use those extra 10 rooms for standardized testing in May.

With May approaching and the construction company still waiting on materials to secure doors in the new classrooms, Butler Area School District administrators are working on other plans.

“Without having specific door hardware, you can’t utilize that space. There’s a lot of finishing work still going on,” said Brian White, superintendent of the district. “The construction company is planning on meeting with a building inspector to see when that can happen and when can we use different parts of the space.”

David Johnson, project manager for Eckles Construction Services, told the school board Monday, April 24, that the building code inspector is scheduled to visit the school Tuesday to check the viability of having a few classrooms available for student testing in May.

The new 19,000-square-foot wing at the high school has been under construction since 2021, alongside a separate project that built an auxiliary gym at the school.

White said the gym and its locker rooms have been completed since January; the district is just waiting on the classroom wing to be finished.

White also said the district would use only parts of the new wing for the testing in May, if it is deemed safe by a building inspector.

“That's what we're trying to get, a portion of the rooms available,” White said.
