CLEARFIELD TWP — A man woke up at around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in his Clearfield Township home to the smell of smoke.

Firefighters who responded to the house at 399 Moran Road said the man was “very fortunate” to be able to get up and leave the house before getting injured.

“The fire was coming out the front and the back,” said Rob Shuler, chief of Herman Volunteer Fire Company. “East Butler did a heck of a job getting here, had a heck of a knock down.”

The man was the only person in the two-story home at the time of the fire. Shuler said the fire likely started in the first floor living room of the house.

Shuler also said East Butler Volunteer Fire Company got to the house first and was able to extinguish much of the fire, but the damage to the house made it a total loss.

Firefighters blocked off the road from Route 422 so trucks could line Moran Road to provide water.

Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Company, Butler Bureau of Fire, Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Chicora Volunteer Fire Department, Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company and Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the fire. Crews began departing the scene around 9 p.m.
