Leo 'Rocky' Hillwig Sr.

Leo G. "Rocky" Hillwig Sr., 92, of East Brady died Monday at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 21, 1912, in Marianna, Washington County, he was the son of Arnold W. and Jennie N. Hay Hillwig.

He had been a coal miner before World War II and was a barber in the East Brady area for more than 60 years after the war. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening

Mr. Hillwig served in the Army's 752nd Railway Operating Battalion during WWII, campaigned in Central Europe and the Rhineland and received the Meritorious Unit Award and a Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of East Brady, American Legion Post 402 of East Brady and the National Rifle Association.

Surviving are seven sons, Richard L. Hillwig of Chicora, Larry A. Hillwig of Hilliards, Leo G. Hillwig Jr. of Bruin, Terry R., Chris A. and Val D. Hillwig, all of Perry Township, Armstrong County, and Theodore J. Hillwig of Cowansville; and three daughters, Saundra Evankovich of Perry Township, Sherry Thomas of Bradys Bend and Rebecca Minto of Lyndora. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Beulah M. "Boots" Dowling Hillwig and Hazel Buzzard Hillwig; a daughter; a son; five brothers; three sisters; a stepson; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

<B>HILLWIG</B> - Friends of Leo G. "Rocky" Hillwig Sr., who died Monday, March 14, 2005, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at CHARLES B. BUECHELE FUNERAL HOME, 105 Fourth St., East Brady. Visitation also will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, East Brady, where services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Agnes Brady, church moderator, officiating. Burial will be at Bradys Bend Cemetery.American Legion Post 402 will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.The Armstrong County American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors Friday at the cemetery.
