Clinton Township OKs creation of historical society

CLINTON TWP — Township supervisors approved the creation of a historical society at their general meeting on Wednesday, May 10.

The society’s mission is related to the upcoming update of the area’s comprehensive plan, said Supervisor William Duncan, board vice chairman. He credited supervisor chairwoman Kathy Allen with the idea. Allen was absent from the meeting.

“Kathy Allen has been interested in creating this historical society for awhile,” Duncan said, “and gathering some of the older residents that know the history of the township, and capture that to be part of the comprehensive plan.”

One member of the society will be supervisor James Halstead. He said that the society will decide on how best to protect the area’s history, like preserving specific landmarks and documents for example.

“We’re going to find out after we meet,” Halstead said. “We’re going to put our heads together and identify different properties and histories in the township.”

One example of a potential preservation project given was Rocky Run School, the township’s original school that still stands. The school currently is on private property.
