Canada wildfires bring haze, increased temperatures to county
Butler County residents were walking in a haze the morning of Thursday, May 11, due to wildfires in western Canada, according to the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh.
The high-altitude smoke could have further effect on local weather, according to David Schallenberger, meteorologist.
Schallenberger said the wildfires taking place in the Alberta Province of Canada are part of the country’s wildfire season.
“This is around the same time of the Fort McMurray wildfire ... it was May 10, 2016,” he said.
The smoke shouldn’t have an effect on air quality, Schallenberger said, but it can in other ways.
“What the smoke does is you’ll get a bit of a greenhouse effect, increased temperatures,” he said.
Thursday’s temperatures were hovering around 80 degrees, with the rest of the week staying in the upper 70s, according to the forecast.
