C.W. 'Jim' Best

C.W. “Jim” Best, 91, of Butler passed away Monday at Good Samaritan Hospice, Cabot.

He was born on July 20, 1923, in Perryville, Clarion County, the son of the late Joseph C. Best and Helen Brown Best Grossman.

Jim was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was a radio operator on an aircraft carrier.

He retired from the BO Railroad.

Jim's passions in life were fishing, hunting, camping, boating, traveling and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was an avid Steelers, Pirates and Penguins fan. Jim enjoyed dancing, listening to Big Band music, watching Western movies, eating his wife's cooking, watching fireworks and going to his camp “Lady Luck Lodge” in Kane. Most of all, Jim loved spending time with his family and his late wife, Lois, of 57 years.

Surviving are his twin daughters, Sally Jean (David) Settimio of Altoona and Sandra Jo (William) Gamble of Butler; his son, Richard Scott (Lynne) Best of West Sunbury; his 10 grandchildren; his sister, Betsy (Lynn) Buckham of Boswell; and his brother, David (Virginia) Best of Beaulah, Mich., and The Villages, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Ethel (Flynn) Best, who he married on Aug. 12, 1950, and his stepfather, Donald Grossman.

Best— The friends of C.W. “Jim” Best, who passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. James R. Bertoti officiating. Interment will be in the Butler County Memorial Park with military honors by the VFW Post 249 and the American Legion Post 778.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot, PA 16023.For more information, go to www.youngfuneralhomes.com.
