Butler teen sentenced for shooting bald eagle
HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Game Commission said today a Butler County teenager must pay restitution and court costs of $5,200 for unlawfully shooting an immature bald eagle.
The boy, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, must also perform 50 hours of community service and had his hunting and trapping privileges revoked for three years.
The Game Commission said the boy shot the bird on Nov. 17 near the Pennsylvania American Water Co. along Route 38.
The bird was taken to the Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Crawford County, where X-rays revealed a broken wing and shotgun pellets still embedded in the creature. It died Nov. 26.
The Game Commission said it received tips after the story of the shooting was printed in the Butler Eagle.
The boy claimed he did not know what the bird was, as it was only about 7 months old and had not yet developed the bald eagle's characteristic white plumage on its head.
