Moniteau girls win 3 field events

BROOKVILLE — Moniteau had a field day at Brookville High School.

Three Warrior girls claimed District 9 Class 2A championships in field events on Friday.

Rylee Long won the triple jump, Autumn Stewart the shot put and Emma Covert the discus.

The efforts helped the Warriors place second to Elk County Catholic in the team standings.

Long was a returning champion. She won here two years ago in the same event before placing fourth last year.

“I was seeded first today, so my goal was definitely to win,” said Long, who went 35 feet, one-fourth inch. She went 36-11.5 at the Oil City Invitational earlier this season and hopes to close the season with a strong performance at next week’s state championship meet.

“When I went two years ago, that was my first year of track,” Long said. “I’m a lot more confident this time.”

Stewart has never been to the state meet and had one more opportunity to change that.

“My goal was to throw 36-6 (state qualifying standard), but if I didn’t get that, I knew I had to place in the top two to get there,” Stewart said.

Her throw of 36 feet, three-fourths inch was good for first place and Stewart will be making that trip to Shippensburg.

“I’m a senior and this was my last chance,” she said. “I wanted it so badly. This means the world to me.”

Covert’s win in the discus is even more impressive by the fact that it’s her first year competing in track and field. The pitcher for Moniteau’s softball team had a distance of 112-5 to be crowned district champion.

“This is crazy,” she said. “I almost don’t believe it.

“I had a throw of 110-something earlier today and that took some pressure off of me. I placed first at the Oil City Invite this year and knew if I worked at it, I could get even better.”
