“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

That’s the advice Brenda Roush recalls her father, Cecil Quinn, telling her.

Quinn, of Butler, died at age 72 in 2012. He had retired from Commonwealth Utility Equipment Co., according to his obituary.

“He passed away 11 years ago, and I find myself saying his phrase all the time and finding out it’s very true,” Roush said.

She and other readers responded to a recent callout by the Butler Eagle asking “What is the best advice that your dad has given you?”

Heather Anne Michel, of Butler, said her father, Bob Ferguson, also of Butler, told her to “never stay where you aren't valued.”

Ferguson, who died in 2010, was a computer teacher for the Butler Area School District for 35 years, according to his obituary.

“He is gone now, but what he told me is still with me,” Michel said. “Even living in the same place I grew up, I still need to remind myself that this is valid advice.”

Deborah Dawson Ries, of Butler, recalled that her father, Charles Dawson, who died in 1976, would say “never do anything that you have to say I'm sorry.”

“This has stuck with me my whole life,” she said.
