It’s a huge honor for a Boy Scout troop to produce an Eagle Scout, which is the Boy Scouts of America’s highest achievement.

Troop 6 of Butler tripled that feat recently.

Ryan Orsborn, 16; Stephen Sheptak, 18; and Tyler Stoops, 18, all of Troop 6, are now Eagle Scouts.

For his Eagle Scout project, Ryan, a Butler Senior High junior, upgraded the lighting for St. Paul Catholic Church’s Nativity scene. Some lights were not working, so Ryan rewired all the older lighting and upgraded it to LED.

Sheptak researched and identified the veterans laid to rest at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Allegheny County, acquired American flags from the county, built flag holders for each of the veterans’ graves, and placed the flags at the graves to honor the men.

Flags will now be placed on the graves each year. Sheptak is a 2023 graduate of Butler Senior High School.

Stoops built a large information kiosk for the Old Stone House in Brady Township. He obtained permission from the North Country Trail Association and Slippery Rock University, then worked with family and troop members to complete the kiosk.

Stoops also is a 2023 graduate of Butler Senior High School.

All three scouts began their Boy Scout experience at age 5 or 6 in Pack 6 Cub Scouts, and continued into Troop 6 Boy Scouts.

“The motto of Troop 6 is ‘in a fix, call on six,’ and each of the boys completed a project that will help their community in a significant way,” said Beth Orsborn, who is Ryan’s mother.
