Slippery Rock flag-raising event to kick off Independence Day celebrations

To kick off Independence Day celebrations in Slippery Rock, the largest and highest-flying American flag within 330 square miles of the region will be raised Saturday, July 1.

Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliary units, alongside local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scout troops will lead the Grand Old Flag Raising and Dedication Ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

Hoisted at 1,300 feet above sea level at the highest point in Slippery Rock, the 40-foot-by-80-foot flag would make an impressive view, Mayor JonDavid Longo said.

Longo said he hoped that the landmark would become a gathering point for future celebrations in the borough, especially as the United States approaches its semiquincentennial celebration in 2026.

“I think that first and foremost it’s important to mention that we have a very patriotic community … a heavy veteran community,” Longo said. “Along with our other patriotic endeavors, this is just one more thing for our community to show love for country.”

Joining the event are Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16, Sheriff Michael Slupe and Bri Farrand of America250PA, among others. Classically trained operatic singer, Blake Michaux, will lead the national anthem at the ceremony.

Longo said that funds were raised exclusively by independent and private donors, citizens, and businesses after local stakeholders expressed interest in the project. Among the businesses that raised funds for the event are the Ginger Ale Tavern, Deep Well Services, Renick Brothers, TD Energy and the Slippery Rock University Foundation.

The project was facilitated by VFW Post 6231 and American Legion Post 93, he said. Veterans posts in Harrisville and Grove City also lent their support.

After the ceremony, from 4 to 10 p.m., visitors will be able to take part in the carnival attractions, marking the fourth annual Independence Day celebration on South Main Street. A total of 45 different food and craft vendors will be present.

Fireworks launch at 9:55 p.m. to end the evening.
