Harold K. Miller

Harold K. Miller, 100, of Chicora and Tarpon Springs, Fla., died at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday at Golfside Regional Hospice in New Port Richey, Fla., after an illness.

Born Jan. 20, 1904, in Clintonville, he was the son of Sylvester and Margaret Sloan Miller.

He was a graduate of Slippery Rock Normal School, now Slippery Rock University, and had taught grades 1 through 8 in one-room schools in Erico, Argentine, Eau Claire and Saxonburg. Because teachers were not paid during the summer, he supplemented his income by painting houses and selling World Book Encyclopedia; but during the war years history changed so quickly that they suspended publication. In 1942, he went to work at Pullman Standard and retired as supervisor of the shipping department in 1969.

He and his wife, Mildred A. Oudette Miller, whom he married in 1928, owned and operated the Dairy Bar in Chicora from 1951-1955. It was a popular meeting place for Chicora area teenagers.

Mr. Miller was instrumental in founding rifle clubs in Eau Claire, Pullman Standard and Chicora. He was the 15th charter Golden Eagle member of the NRA and was the oldest member of North Butler Presbyterian Church.

In 1965, he purchased a camp in Quebec, where he annually hosted moose hunters and anglers. His last moose-hunting trip was in October 2003. He also enjoyed fishing in Florida; and in past years, he made three trips to Alaska and the Yukon for big game hunting and panning for gold. He spent summers at his Chicora farm, where he was an avid Christmas tree grower.

Surviving are two sons, Paul DeWayne "Red" Miller and his wife, Ruth, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Bob Miller and his wife, Glenda, of Chicora; and seven grandchildren, Randy Miller and his wife, Michele, of Chicora, Robert Miller and his wife, Norma, of Karns City, Judy McGregor and her husband, Ken, of Petrolia, Patty Snow of Karns City, Rick Miller of Chicora, and Jean Fillhart and her husband, Ted, and Linda Bridges and her husband, Greg, all of North Carolina. He also is survived by 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died May 24, 1975; and a great-grandson, Jeremy L. Miller, who died Jan. 1, 1996. He also was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

MILLER - Friends of Harold K. Miller, who died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, 111 E. Slippery Rock St., Chicora. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mary Sickels, his church pastor, and the Rev. Rickard F. Rowe, pastor of Petrolia Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be at Clintonville Methodist Cemetery.
