Fred E. Powell
Fred E. “Poppy” Powell, 90, a guest at Laurelbrooke Assisted Living in Brookville, formerly of Summerville, Jefferson County, died Tuesday at Brookville Hospital.
Born Oct. 13, 1920, in Summerville, he was a son of the late Jacob and Carrie M. (Sayers) Powell.
He was a veteran of World War II and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Asian-Pacific Theater.
Mr. Powell worked as a miner and a laborer for the Hanley Brick Co. in Summerville.
He was a member of the Brookville F.O.E. 983 and a former charter member of the Summerville VFW.
He enjoyed walking and gardening, and he was an avid Brookville Grays fan
Surviving are his children, Linda F. Heller (William) of Brookville, Valerie J. Plyler of Vienna, Ohio, Fred A. Powell of Summerville, Charles T. Powell (Brenda) of Brookville, Byron J. Powell (Kimberly) of Brookville, Jody B. Eldridge (Scott) of Zelienople, Kevin R. Powell (Sarah) of Sigel, Timothy A. Powell of Brookville and Mark E. Powell (Beth) of State College; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Earlene L. Powell; a grandson, Ryan E. Powell; and two infant brothers, Arnold and Alvin Powell.
<B>POWELL </B>— Visitation for Fred E. “Poppy” Powell, who died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>McKinney Funeral Home</B>, 345 Main St., Brookville. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. James Dietrich officiating. Interment will be in the Vandervort Cemetery, Summerville.Memorial contributions may be made to the Brookville Grays or the Raider Mat Club.
