A Pittsburgh boy was not wearing floatation devices when he died after drowning Monday afternoon, Aug. 7, at Moraine State Park, according to the Butler County coroner.

Sholom Markel, 4, was found unresponsive in the area of Pleasant Valley Beach on the South Shore at around 1:50 p.m., Coroner William F. Young III said Tuesday.

Moraine State Park manager Dustin Drew said the boy had been swimming with his family at the beach.

“He was within the roped swimming area. He was at one point found unresponsive,” Drew said. “We closed beach for a time while it was occurring. We didn't find any hazards or anything like that.“

Drew said there was no storm activity at the time of the drowning, and the incident is being investigated.

Responding to the call were Portersville EMS, Prospect Fire Department Rescue, Butler Ambulance and an Allegheny Health Network emergency room physician.
