Harold Chauncey Griffin, 85, of Valencia passed away Thursday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.

Born Aug. 16, 1926, in Smithfield, Pa., he was a son of the late Francis and Ella (Rohrer) Griffin.

Harold was a graduate of Butler High School, Class of 1944. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, with two years of service.

He retired as the superintendent of services with Armco Steel Corp., Butler Works, now AK Steel, in 1983 after 40 years.

He was a member of the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church. Harold also was a member of the John E. Mair Masonic Lodge, the Masonic Motorcycle Club International, the Butler Council of Royal and Select Master Masons of Pennsylvania, the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory of Scottish Rite, a life member of Shriners International, Syria Caravan, Lorraine Commandery of Knights Templar, Butler Shrine Luncheon Club, Butler Royal Arch Chapter, Golden Triangle York Rite College and Red Cross of Constantine-St. Johns Conclave, Erie. He also was a member of the North Hills Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Independent Order of Oddfellows and Lions Club International.

He was a founding member of Sunset Riders Motorcycle Club, Butler. In addition, Harold was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Butler Flying Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, American Legion and an honorary member of the Pennsylvania Sheriffs' Association.

Harold enjoyed motorcycle riding, flying private planes, performing with the “yellow car” Syria Shrine parade unit, travelling, theater-going, feeding wild turkeys in his backyard, showing horses and above all being a wonderful husband and father.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Mrs. James (Carolyn) Holt of Boiling Springs, Pa., and Mrs. Charlene Shaw of Slippery Rock; four granddaughters, Melanie Drewencki of Philadelphia, Dr. Laura Drewencki of Charleston, S.C., and Emma and Eleanor Shaw, both of Slippery Rock; one grandson, Steven Holt of Houston, Texas; one brother, Francis R. Griffin of Prospect; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Vincent Griffin, who passed away May 22, 2005. They were married Sept. 1, 1950, in the Harbison Chapel, Grove City. He also was preceded in death by one brother, C. William Griffin.

GRIFFIN — Harold Chauncey Griffin died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012. There will be a private Masonic service, open only to fellow Masons and Shrine members, at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Fox Funeral Home, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg, and a public viewing from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be a memorial service and luncheon at 12:30 p.m. at the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church, the historic Roebling church. Private military honors and interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Butler.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice In-Patient Unit.Information also is available at www.foxfuneralhomeinc.com.
