Scoop looks to fly high in ‘23
It wasn’t all that long ago that the 2022 high school football season ended. It was mid-November when our last two teams standing, Freeport and Slippery Rock, bowed from the postseason, leaving me feeling a bit empty.
I fell short of my annual goal of 100 wins, finishing with a record of 91-23. I’ve had all offseason to think about that disappointment and now, with a new season upon us, I’m more determined than ever to reach the century mark.
The first week of action includes some very tough games to pick. After dusting off my thinking cap, I have adjusted it just right and am ready to go.
Football is back!!
Butler at Shaler — The Golden Tornado won this matchup last year, but the Titans return a lot of experience at the skill positions.
Score: Shaler 26-24
Seneca Valley at Penn Hills — Both teams missed the playoffs last year despite rosters filled with talent. I see the Indians beginning 2023 on a high note.
Score: Penn Hills 24-13
Hampton at Knoch — The Talbots have shut out the Knights three straight years. I believe Knoch is in for a good season and it will put up some points Friday, just not enough.
Score: Hampton 27-16
Montour at Mars — This is my pick for Game of the Week. Both teams return no shortage of talent and that should make for a back-and-forth affair.
Score: Mars 31-28
Freeport at Indiana — The Little Indians are seeking a positive start after a 3-7 effort last year. Despite a lot of green on its roster, Freeport denies Indiana that opportunity.
Score: Freeport 18-14
Serra Catholic at North Catholic — Chris Rizzo is the new man in charge of the Trojans. I see his tenure beginning with a bang.
Score: North Catholic 25-10
DuBois Area at Karns City — Luke Cramer is back and healthy and ready to contribute on both sides of the ball. Bad news for the Beavers.
Score: Karns City 27-8
Saint Marys at Moniteau — The Dutch have to replace a lot of offensive production lost to graduation. They’ll earn a win with their defense against the Warriors.
Score: Saint Marys 16-6
Union/A-C Valley at Cameron County — I see the Falcon Knights flying high this season and the Raiders just don’t possess the firepower to keep up.
Score: Union/A-C Valley 36-12
General McLane at Slippery Rock — This is a matchup of two teams searching for new leaders. With the Rockets playing at home, that will be the difference.
Score: Slippery Rock 20-16
Summit Academy at Shady Side Academy — With so much turnover every year, it’s a given the Knights will improve as the year goes on. But it’s tough to pick them to win in August.
Score: Shady Side Academy 33-8
