Wind damage blows through certain spots in Butler County Thursday night
More than 200 Butler County residents woke up Friday morning without power after damaging winds came through Butler County overnight, the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh reported.
West Penn Power was reporting more than 200 outages around 7:30 a.m. Friday, with most of the outages in Buffalo, Worth and Washington townships and Slippery Rock Borough.
In Slippery Rock, 48 outages were reported for West Penn Power customers. Worth and Washington townships each had fewer than 30 outages each.
According to David Shallenberger, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a number of warnings were issued for an area that included Butler County. The affected area also included Lawrence, Mercer, Allegheny counties as storms moved southeast.
“A lot of it was a squall line that moved in. Then, we had a few rotations in that line of storms,” Shallenberger said.
Shallenberger estimates the storms began to hit Butler County around midnight.
“It was all wind damage essentially,” he said.
According to Scott Garing, chief of Harmony Fire District, the majority of the storms hit the area between 1 and 3 a.m. with no signs of infrastructure damage or power outages to his knowledge.
He said the department responded to two incidents.
“Nothing really complex or noticeable,” Garing said. “To my knowledge it was just some trees or wires down.”
A number of people posted to the Zelienople, Harmony Area Community Forum on Facebook reporting debris and items scattered across their yards. One Facebook user posted a picture of items floating in her pool. Another posted a picture of a tree branch that fell into the street.
