Edward Vincent Murray, 84, of Butler died late Tuesday evening at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler.

Born Jan. 2, 1927, in Heilwood, Indiana County, he was the son of the late James V. and Gertrude N. (Rodgers) Murray.

Edward grew up and was educated in Heilwood, and in December 1943, at the age of 16, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served as a gunner's mate in the Pacific during World War II.

In 1949, he married Mary Catherine Trimble, and soon after they settled in Butler, where they raised their two children, Roger and LuAnn.

In 1978, Mary died following a long battle with cancer.

He later married his current wife, Mary Ann (Penrod) Murray, on Nov. 27, 1999.

Ed enjoyed the company of his wife, grandchildren and his two dogs, Fritz and Bentley.

He was a member of St. Wendelin Roman Catholic Church.

He enjoyed working crossword puzzles and was an avid sports fan.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Murray of Butler; a son, Roger Murray and his wife, Lynnaya, of Houston, Texas; a daughter, LuAnn Houlette and her husband, Steve, of Dayton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Briana Sarosi and her husband, Billy, of Washington, D.C., Scott Stout of Dayton, Ohio, and Sean Stout of Albany, N.Y.; three stepsons, Robert Penrod of Marietta, Ga., Stephen Penrod and his wife, Lisa, of Springdale and Joseph Penrod and his wife, Danielle, of Butler; and seven step-grandchildren, Lee, Sara, Dillon, Abby, Nicholas, Megan and Maura Penrod.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James R. Murray.

<B>MURRAY</B> — Friends of Edward Vincent Murray, who died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at the St. Wendelin Roman Catholic Church, Carbon Center. The Rev. Steven V. Neff, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Wendelin Parish Cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the VNA Inpatient Hospice, 115 Technology Drive, Butler, PA 16001.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
