One man jailed after police chase leads to Pittsburgh

CRANBERRY TWP — One man is in custody after leading police on a chase this morning to the streets of downtown Pittsburgh.

Cranberry Township police asked neighboring police to watch out for a white Ford pick-up truck followed by another white vehicle. The truck was wanted in connection with a theft from the Wal-Mart store in Cranberry.

Officer Pete Churberko of Ross Township police said the initial theft happened about an hour before the chase began. But then the suspects in the theft returned to Wal-Mart "presumably to commit another theft."

About 4 a.m. Ross Township officers spotted the pick-up along Interstate 79. Two police vehicles gave chase, but the pick-up never slowed down, he said. The truck continued down the Parkway North, making it to the Strip District neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

There, Churberko said, the driver jumped from the truck and hid in some bushes. Pittsburgh police used a K-9 unit to find the suspect.

The man, whom police are not identifying, was charged by Ross Township police with reckless endangerment, fleeing and eluding police, and a number of summary traffic violations.

Churberko said more charges by Cranberry police are pending the review of the surveillance video at Wal-Mart.

The suspect was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

The police report did not state what happened to the other white vehicle.
