Brookville ground attack too much for Moniteau’s Warriors
CHERRY TWP — A heavy run attack in the first half and a punishing passing attack in the second half helped Brookville (2-2) defeat Moniteau (1-3), 47-28, Friday night at the newly dedicated Luciano Plesakov Stadium.
Running back Anthony Ceriani racked up 140 yards on 18 carries for the Raiders and quarterback Charlie Krug threw for 224 yards and five touchdowns on their way to their second football win in a row.
“Anytime you can run the ball like that, especially in the first half, you got to be happy,” Brookville coach Gabe Bowley said. “I thought the offensive line played really well and Ceriani ran the ball as tough as I’ve seen him run it, for sure.”
The teams traded interceptions in the first quarter, but Brookville was able to cash in on its with a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jack Pete to open up the scoring.
Moniteau later took advantage of a fumble recovery by its defense when Blaine Jamison caught an 18-yard touchdown from quarterback Trent Beachem.
“Blaine started out hot,” Moniteau coach Rob Rottman said. “He had an interception, he had a touchdown. I really didn’t know what he had until he came in this year.”
The Raiders would go on to score the next four touchdowns of the game, behind the running attack of Ceriani.
Moniteau started the second half with an onside kick try to get itself back into the game, but the try failed and Brookville would take advantage of the short field just a few plays later with Krug’s fourth touchdown of the evening.
“It’s a missed tackle here or a missed assignment there,” Rottman said. “I think you do see the kids have fire and the talent is coming. They are young. I think it’s just a matter of learning and putting it all together.”
Krug’s fifth touchdown would come early in the fourth quarter, which ignited a running clock and put Moniteau in a corner.
That didn’t kill the Warriors’ spirit, however, as they would go on to score two more touchdowns before the game ended as well as two-point conversions following both touchdowns.
“I don’t think (Moniteau) was doing anything differently other than executing very well,” Bowley said. “I think they found some of our weaknesses toward the end there.”
Up next, Moniteau will travel to Karns City where it will look to turn the tide against one of its more familiar foes.
“ (Brookville) was able to run the ball pretty well on us,” Rottman said. “It’s just one of those things where we were just sitting a little too long and reading instead of attacking.”
