John Twerdok
John Twerdok, 95, of Butler, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at Sergeant Joseph George Kusick Community Living Center at Butler VA Medical Center.
He was born on March 13, 1928, in Lyndora, to the late Harry Twerdok and Anna (Felix) Twerdok.
He was a dedicated member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Butler, where he served on the property committee for 26 years. Additionally, John was a member of BUCO Camping Club. He was also an avid square-dancer and round-dancer, having been in the Keystone Squares Club for 40 years with his wife, Jean. John always offered to lend a helping hand when needed. He was also an accomplished golfer, having played from his teenage years to the age of 92. He loved to roller skate with his wife, Jean, when young and also enjoyed traveling or spending time with his friends, family and all his grandchildren.
John attended Butler Area High School in the class of 1947.
John was a seaman first class of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. He participated in Operation Crossroads, Atomic Bomb Test- Bikini Atoll and was awarded the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and American Defense Medal. John was discharged in 1947. John was awarded the Atomic Veterans Commemorative Service Medal from the President of United States and Secretary of Defense in 2023.
John worked at Butler Armco Steel as an electrician in the processing maintenance department, retired in 1990 with 42 years of service.
John is survived by his son John W. (Maribeth) Twerdok, of Upper St. Clair, Pa.; and daughters, Patty (David) Gallagher, of Lyndora and Polly (Alan) Berginc, of Butler. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Jean L. Twerdok whom he married on Sept. 27, 1950, and who passed away on July 4, 2012. He was also preceded in death by five brothers; and three sisters.
TWERDOK — Friends of John Twerdok, who died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St., Butler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. David M. Phillips officiating.
Burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Jefferson St., Butler, PA 16001.

Officers and members of the American Legion Post 117, American Legion Post 778 and VFW Post 249 will conduct a military service at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
