Nick Kononchuk
Nick Kononchuk, 92, of Butler died Thursday at VA Butler Healthcare.
Born on Nov. 28, 1921, in Butler, he was a son of the late Eustaphia “Ostop” Kononchuk and Anna (Lokovich) Kononchuk.
He worked as a carpenter at Veterans Affairs for 36 years, retiring in 1979.
Nick was a member of the St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Lyndora, the D.A.V., the American Legion, the VFW and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.
Surviving are his sons, David (June) Kononchuk of Massachusetts and James Kononchuk of Connecticut; his two grandsons, Corey Kononchuk and Taylor Kononchuk; his two great-grandsons, Matthew Piana and Kevin Piana; his sister, Elizabeth Onufer of Pennsylvania; his sister-in-law, Muriel Longanecker of Ohio; and his brother-in-law, Donald Barnhart of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Kononchuk; his brother, Samuel Kononchuk; and his three sisters, Helen Smith, Alice Thomas and Sonia Tita.
Kononchuk — The friends Nick Kononchuk, who died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. David Shortt will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mount Chestnut.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VAMC Butler Hospice, attn.
