Leo S. Czyzyk
Leo S. Czyzyk, 88, of Butler died Saturday at the Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born March 17, 1917, in Lyndora, he was a son of Julius and Aniela Tupaj Czyzyk.
Mr. Czyzyk was a career soldier and served in the Army for more than 20 years. During World War II, he served in the Army Signal Corps in the Pacific at New Guinea, Luzon and the liberation of the South Philippines and was aboard a U.S. troop carrier in Tokyo Bay as the Peace Treaty was signed.
Following his Asian-Pacific service, he was assigned in Germany as a Polish interpreter. He was on active duty during the Korean War and the Cuban Missile crisis in the 1960s. A mechanic in the Armor Division, by that time, he serviced tanks and armored vehicles while stationed in Europe and in the United States.
Following his discharge and retirement from active duty in 1964, he lived at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Washington, D.C., until he returned to live in Butler in 1988.
He greatly enjoyed vegetable gardening, was a life member of the American Legion and took special pride in never missing voting in any election until his illness prevented him from doing so.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Mary S. Rehm of Butler, Mrs. Francis (Laura) Gardina of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Pearl Holbein of Sarver; and 24 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers.
CZYZYK - A Mass of Christian burial for Leo S. Czyzyk, who died Saturday, July 30, 2005, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave. The Rev.
