Melvin R. Somerville, 71, of Saxonburg passed away Wednesday at Kindred Hospital in Beaver.

Born March 18, 1939, in Parsons, W.Va., he was the son of William and Mary Propst Somerville.

He had worked as a craneman for J&L Steel in Aliquippa, and he owned Mel's Appliance in Butler from 1988 to 1998.

He was involved in the 12-step program and a was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a volunteer at Concordia.

His favorite saying was: "It's a great day to be above ground."

Surviving are three daughters, Melissa F. Strephans of Wickenburg, Ariz., Marcia (Brian) Pershing of Canfield, Ohio, and April Winters of Butler; four sons, Robert (Sarah) Buck of Freedom, Tim (Sharon Kaluzny) Cushey of Natrona Heights, Todd (Tammy) Cushey of Saxonburg and Matthew Reinhart of Saxonburg; three brothers, Danny Somerville of Ohio, Sam Somerville of Florida and Jim Liller of Beaver Falls; two sisters, Nancy Holsinger of Virginia and Phyllis Tucker of Washington; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy A. Somerville on Jan. 5, 2006; his parents; four brothers; and four sisters.

<B>SOMERVILLE </B>— Friends of Melvin R. Somerville, who died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Chicken Coop at Holy Trinity Monastery, Bull Creek Road, Butler.Arrangements are being handled by the <B>Fox Funeral Home,</B> Saxonburg.
