Esther Joan Boyd Martsolf, 95, of Butler, peacefully passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born June 1, 1928, in Crawford County, she was the daughter of the late Leslie E. and Nora Mae Reitz Boyd.

Joan was a lifelong member of the Meridian Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed being a leader of the Tuesday Bible Study, former choir director, former Sunday school teacher and leader of the prayer chain.

After obtaining her bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock College, she taught first grade and retired after 28½ years teaching in the Butler Area School District.

Upon visiting her, you would see she was an avid collector of cardinals and indoor house plants.

She is survived by her two grandsons, Michael (Tracy) Martsolf and Richard (Kristen) Martsolf; great-grandchildren, Kathryn and Charlotte; and her sister, Deborah (Philip) Simpson of Orlando, Fla.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul W. Martsolf, who passed away May 24, 1995; son, Dennis P. Martsolf; two infant sisters, Doris and Rebecca; and sisters, Lorraine Majetic and Delores Henrich.

MARTSOLF — A memorial service for Esther Joan Boyd Martsolf, who died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Devotion at Butler County Memorial Park and Mausoleum, 380 Evans City Road, Butler, with the Rev. Stephen M. Franklin, her church pastor, officiating. Inurnment will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meridian Presbyterian Church, 4150 Highland Ave., Butler, PA 16001.

Cremation services were entrusted to RAISLEY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 387 Main St., Prospect.
