Saxonburg VFC to hold mock missing person training exercise

The Saxonburg Fireman’s Club on Pittsburgh Street will play host to a mock missing person training exercise on Oct. 22, organized by police and fire agencies from Butler and Armstrong counties.

In addition to the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company, the Butler County Fire Police Association, Saxonburg police, Lower Kiski Emergency Search and Rescue, and Western Pennsylvania CERT are taking part.

During the exercise, which lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants will be led through a number of realistic missing person scenarios. Staff from Lower Kiski search and rescue also will give a presentation on missing person behavior and search strategies.

“We’re going to help supply information, direct traffic, set up staging areas and things like that,” said Eugene Bartlett, president of the Butler County Fire Police Association. “Just like when there’s an actual missing person.”

To make the training exercise run more efficiently, the association is seeking volunteers to come and play certain roles in the simulation, such as family members, concerned citizens and reporters.
