State police in Allegheny County have released additional information surrounding a fiery tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 79 that killed two, including a Butler resident, on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Frank L. Tupper Jr., 54, of Butler, died at the scene after his vehicle was hit head-on by a tractor-trailer traveling the wrong way on the interstate, according to Trooper Rocco Gagliardi, state police public information officer for Troop B.

The crash occurred at 12:27 a.m. near Sewickley Hills when a southbound tractor-trailer crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes, according to police. The tractor-trailer hit Tupper’s vehicle, police said.

Documents showed both vehicles were pushed into an embankment, then the trailer portion of the tractor-trailer collided with a another vehicle traveling north.

The tractor-trailer and Tupper’s vehicle caught fire and were engulfed in flames, according to police. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner indicated Tupper’s time of death as 12:50 a.m. The driver of the tractor-trailer has not been identified by officials.

According to Gagliardi, there was one passenger in Tupper’s vehicle who was transported for injuries suffered in the crash. He did not identify the passenger.

According to Tupper’s obituary, he is survived by his wife, Beth, and three children. He was a member of Local Union 1058 for 25 years as a union steward.

“He acted as a leader and role model for his co-workers and was beloved by them all,” his obituary read.

Tupper was also noted as a corn-hole champion and “a man who was never too tired to be of service to those who needed it,” in the obituary.

The crash investigation is ongoing, according to police.
