Smell of smoke in hospital prompts response, officials said
Crews responded to a smell of smoke at Butler Memorial Hospital early Monday, Oct. 9, but did not find a fire.
Chris Switala, chief of Butler Bureau of Fire, said the smell came from a HVAC unit, but smoke was not seen.
“It was just the smell of smoke due to a belt in an HVAC unit overheating,” he said. “I’m not sure where in the hospital it was.”
Crews were on scene from 2:38 a.m. to 3:53 a.m., according to dispatchers. Switala said it took a while to locate the smell, but he does not believe anyone was evacuated.
Efforts to reach a representative from Independence Health were unsuccessful.
Butler Township Volunteer Fire District also responded to the call.
