Sgt. David Duffey, a graduate student majoring in criminal justice at Slippery Rock University, has been awarded North America’s highest honor for civilian heroism.

Duffey recently received the Carnegie Medal for risking serious injury or death in saving a truck driver’s life on Oct. 16, 2022, by pulling him from the burning cab of his truck moments before it exploded.

Duffey, of Midway, Washington County, was returning to Slippery Rock after a weekend of Army National Guard training when he witnessed an accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

His intervention saved the life of Shune E. Moore, who was driving the truck.

“I'm thankful to receive this award, but I give all the glory to God for the safe outcome on that day,” Duffey said. “Reflecting on my experience and looking at the stories of the other award recipients, I consider it an honor and blessing to be recognized and included in this group.”

In addition to the medal, Duffey received a $7,500 grant.
