Freeport’s volleyball train just keeps on rolling.

The defending PIAA 2A champion Yellowjackets (19-1) swept past Shenango, 3-0, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs on Saturday. Match scores were 25-9, 25-22, 25-22,.

Alaina Whitlinger had 13 kills and 15 service points for Freeport while Josie Russo contributed 10 kills and eight service points. Sydney Selker had seven kills, 13 service points and four blocks.

Leah Schreckengost contributed six kills and 14 service points while Grace Beach tallied 12 service points, four blocks, three kills and 29 assists.

Freeport will face Avonworth (14-6) in the semifinal round on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

North Catholic 3, Trinity 1 — The Trojanettes improved to 17-1 with this WPIAL Class 3A victory. North Catholic will face Oakland Catholic (15-3) in the semifinals on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Girls Soccer

Simone Sharpless scored for North Catholic, but the Trojanettes lost to Shady Side Academy, 3-1, in a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal at Freedom High School.

The result snapped an 11-game winning streak for North, which finishes the season with a record of 14-3.

South Park 5, Freeport 1 — The Yellowjackets (15-2-1) fell at home in a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal.
