Garage fire in Slippery Rock Township doused by garden hose, officials said

A small garage fire in Slippery Rock Township on Saturday, Dec. 2, was doused with a garden hose by a homeowner and a group of hunters before firefighters arrived, officials said Monday.

The fire, which was reported around 9:50 a.m. at a garage in the 100 block of Reddick Lane, started from a battery pack charger in the two-story structure, according to Ryan Hanchosky, chief of Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company.

“It got dispatched as a working structure fire. When I arrived on scene, there were light smoke conditions coming from the garage,” he said. “Nearby hunters saw the smoke and ripped some shingles off the roof. They were able to spray it with a garden hose.”

The fire was put out in five minutes, Hanchosky said. The battery pack which caused the fire was removed, and smoke was ventilated from the second story.

“It sounded like it was a lot worse than it actually was,” he said.

Harrisville, Unionville and Pine Township volunteer fire companies, Clintonville and Grove City volunteer fire departments, and Slippery Rock’s EMS unit were initially called to the scene. Hanchosky said once he arrived on scene, he held the call to only Slippery Rock units.
