James Hutchinson
James Benson Hutchinson, 92, of Penn Township, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023.
Jim was born in 1931 in Butler, and was the son of Gordon and Grace Hutchinson.
He graduated from Butler High School in 1949 and was the senior class president. He went on to college at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind., and was on the golf team all four years. Jim graduated in 1953 and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Norfolk, Va. After returning home, he owned and operated the family business, Hutchinson Cleaners & Dyers.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Margaret (Peggy) Hutchinson, who passed away on Dec. 31, 2021.
In 1948, Jim became the youngest men’s golf champion at the Butler Country Club at the age of 17. After 75 years, his record still stands. Jim enjoyed golfing and traveling with Peggy to South Bend, Ind., to attend Notre Dame football games.
He is survived by eight children, Jack Hutchinson of Butler, Dick (Andrea) Hutchinson of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Joan (Frank) Ferraro of Butler, Dan (Gail) Hutchinson of Eden Prairie, Minn., Jim Hutchinson Jr. of Washington, D.C., Steve (Lorraine) Hutchinson of Butler, Anne (Kelly) Hutchinson of Butler and Peggy (Bob) Lang of Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Joseph Hutchinson; and one grandson, Benjamin Hutchinson.
Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and cousin who was loved by many and will be missed by many more.
The family would like to thank the many wonderful, caring aides who were with Jim and Peggy over the past four-plus years.
HUTCHINSON — Friends of James Benson Hutchinson, who died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church, 1304 E. Cruikshank Road, Butler. The Rev. David Schmidt will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Butler. Everyone is asked to please meet at the church Friday morning for Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name to VA Hospital, Homeless Veterans Program, 325 New Castle Road, Butler, PA 16001; Notre Dame University, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556; St. Mark the Evangelist Parish, Holy Sepulcher Church, 1304 E. Cruikshank Road, Butler, PA 16002 or an organization of the donor’s choice.
