Pullman Park field to get new turf

Turf around home plate at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park could be replaced in the next few months, following a vote by the Butler Parks, Recreation, Grounds & Facilities Authority.

Dan Helgert, executive director of Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park, said Wednesday, Dec. 20 the turf would cost about $7,000 to replace, but it is a needed improvement at the field. He said administrators of the park aim to fund problem areas first, before addressing other improvements needed at the park.

“The big thing is our problem areas we want to get done,” Helgert said. “Home plate, and the outfield has a lot of holes in it. We want to start there and hopefully within 12 months, we'll have the whole infield turfed.”

Helgert became executive director of the field about a month ago, but has been a coach of the Butler BlueSox for years. He said the sponsorship of the Michelle Krill name is coming to the end of its term Dec. 31, and a new sponsorship could help fix up the field.

“I'm hoping that working on the outfield is going to be within the next 12 to 18 months,” Helgert said. “If we can get a corporate sponsor, it would be right away. We need sponsors to do this stuff.”
