Margaret ‘Peggy’ Holben

Holben

Peggy will be remembered by friends and family for her simple approach to life, her clever sense of humor and her willingness to help wherever there was a need. She will be greatly missed at family gatherings. She was always quick to laugh, loved a good game, and was the life of the party. She always knew what everyone’s “favorite things” were and made sure they were on hand for family visits. She taught us all to enjoy the simple things in life and to always be there for each other.

Peggy was born on the family farm, on June 28, 1929, in Worth Township, Butler County. Her parents were Frank E. and Joy (Allison) Book. Peggy attended a one-room schoolhouse, Zion School, in Worth Township for grades one through eight. She later graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1947. She went on to New Castle Business College in 1948. She was employed at the former Slippery Rock State Teachers College, now Slippery Rock University, as a secretary in the president and dean of instructions offices and later in the business office.

Peggy was a longtime member of the Tuesday morning Slippery Rock Ladies’ Bowling League and the Wednesday morning Ladies Golf League at Shamrock Golf Course in Slippery Rock. She golfed well into her eighties. Even after she quit golfing, she enjoyed meeting all of her golf friends for lunch. She also enjoyed playing bridge and socializing with the ladies in bridge club.

Peggy was a lifetime member of the Zion Baptist Church in Worth Township. She served as financial secretary for more than 20 years. Peggy married William Dean Holben, on July 1, 1950. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 2007.

Survivors include daughters, Holly D. Lindey (Mike) of Slippery Rock and Mary Jo Burglund (John) of Cranberry Township; six grandchildren, Michael Lindey (Beth), Rachel Milligan (Ed) and Ryan, Emma, Garrett and Nolan Burglund; five great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Waylon and Jackson Milligan and Laurel and Lane Lindey.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Becky Jean Holben; and sister, Dorothy Book Conway.
