A woman who was pulled from a body of water Thursday morning, Jan. 4, on Cranberry Woods Drive in Cranberry Township died in the hospital a few hours later, according to officials.

Crews responded to 1894 Cranberry Woods Drive just after 8 a.m. for reports of a body in the water, according to county dispatchers.

“At no time do we believe the public was in harm’s way,” township police Chief Kevin Meyer said of the Thursday incident.

He said a woman was extracted from the water across the road from MSA Safety’s property and transported by ambulance to UPMC Passavant Hospital in Cranberry Township.

Meyer said the woman was treated for hypothermia and investigators were uncertain if she would survive.

“She was under the water for an unknown period of time,” he said.

A representative from the Butler County Coroner’s Office said they were initially called to the scene, and told the Eagle just after 9:30 a.m. the woman was pronounced dead at UPMC Passavant.

According to Marc Stempka, public relation’s manager for MSA Safety, the incident did not involve MSA, as it occurred across the street from their corporate offices.

Meyer said the woman’s death is under investigation. He added that no other information would likely be released by police.

Officials did not identify the woman. Cranberry Township police, EMS and volunteer firefighters all responded to the scene.
