Donald A. Freeman
Donald A. Freeman, 90, of Cranberry Township died Tuesday.
He was the husband of the late Eva Richardson Freeman; dear father of Donald Freeman and his wife, Nancy; and grandfather of Donald and Beth Ann Freeman. He also is survived by nieces and nephews, Dr. Robert and Dr. Floyd Shultz, Carole Shultz-Keister, John and David Freeman and Diane Summers; and a sister-in-law, Polly Freeman.
Donald was predeceased by his mother, Jennie Beeson Freeman; his father, George Freeman; a sister, Kathryn Freeman Shultz; and a brother, Jesse Freeman.
He was a graduate of Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was a certified plant engineer and held a variety of positions, including chief engineer, Summit Hotel, 1946; chief engineer, Heiskell Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., 1950; superintendent of buildings, St. John Hospital, 1951-1954; manager of housing units, Cleveland, for Porath Realtors, 1955; plant engineer, Homestead Valve Industries, Coraopolis, 1956-1970; managed a 35-story office building for McFadden Enterprises, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., 1970-1975; and as chief engineer, Center City Towers Building, until retiring in 1976.
He also owned and operated the Doneva Farm in Cranberry Township, where he raised beef cattle and did general farming until he retired in 1980.
Mr. Freeman was involved in numerous organizations including the Perry Highway Lions for 40 years, where he earned awards for community service and attendance; life member of the VFW Post 9247 of Wexford and the American Legion Post 0474 of Zelienople; commander of the American Legion Post 923 District 26; the Wexford AARP; the Butler County Farmers Association; member of the Masonic Lodge 287; the Scottish Rites Valley of Pittsburgh; the Syria Temple Legion of Honor; A.A.O.N.M.S. the Pittsburgh Syria Temple; the East Hills Royal Arch Chapter; York Rite; and the Liberty Council.
Donald was a former member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Gibsonia, where he was a deacon and helped build the church. He was a current member of the Salem Methodist Church, Wexford.
He served in the Army First Infantry Division during World War II. He spent six months living deep in the Amazon jungle with the natives in South America.
During his lifetime, he helped anyone in need.
His dear friends Chuck and Fif Utz were a great blessing to him. The staff at Sunrise Assisted Care was a great blessing also.
FREEMAN — Friends of Donald A. Freeman, who died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the GEORGE A. THOMA FUNERAL HOME, 10418 Perry Highway, Wexford. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
