Winona “Nonie” L. Fraley
Winona “Nonie” L. Fraley, 86, of Allegheny Township, passed away peacefully Monday while surrounded by her loving family at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 17, 1930, in Oklahoma Borough, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Howard E. and Grace Skelton Mechling.
Nonie grew up in Oklahoma Borough and Vandergrift. She was a graduate of Washington Township High School and Mason Felix Beauty School. After graduating from beauty school, Nonie worked as an instructor and proudly owned and operated Nonie's Beauty Shop for many years. She also drove buses for the Kiski and Gateway school districts until retiring in 1984.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Vandergrift where she served as deaconess and coordinated the candy fundraisers. Nonie was also a member of the former Vandergrift Motorcycle Club; Ford City and Pittsburgh Bowling Associations; and served as president of the Kiski Band Boosters.
Nonie was an avid bowler, card player and baker extraordinaire. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls and Christmas cookies. She enjoyed camping, riding motorcycles with her late husband, Kenneth W. “Cowboy” Fraley, and most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her sisters, “The Three Musketeers.”
In addition to her parents and husband, Nonie was preceded in death by brothers, Floyd C., Forrest E. and Oren D. Mechling; her sister, Patricia L. Welsh; one infant sister, Martha Yvonne Mechling; and one brother-in-law, Gilbert “Gibby” Hanan.
Surviving are her daughters, Awanda “Sue” (Edward) Ross of Shelocta, and Adele “Dee” (Michael) Calafiore of Prospect; her son Kenneth W. (Susanna) Fraley II of Fenelton; her grandchildren, Mia (Stanley) Shelhorse of Chesapeake, Va., Travis Ross, of Vandergrift and Molly Calafiore of Prospect; her great-grandchildren, Abigail and Emma Shelhorse and Lucas and Hailie Ross; her sisters, Blanche Hanan of Oklahoma Borough and Carole (James) Zimmerman of Washington Township; and a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
FRALEY — Friends of Winona L. “Nonie” Fraley, who died Monday, June 26, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home and Crematory, 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo.Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 290 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, with the Rev.
