Armco Drive realignment project awarded

BUTLER TWP — Township commissioners awarded a $3.39 million road construction project to Frank J. Zottola Construction on Monday, Jan. 15, that will realign the intersection of Hansen Avenue, Armco Drive and Whitestown Road.

The project is expected to take at least six months.

The plan for the intersection across the Picklegate Bridge includes realignment of Armco Drive and some left-turning lanes to make exiting that road easier, according to Tom Knights, Butler Township manager. Construction could begin in March or April, Knights said, and once completed, the intersection will resemble a cross.

Butler Township received a $1.4 million Commonwealth Financing Authority grant, and all of it will go toward the construction project. Traffic at the intersection will be affected during construction because PennDOT most likely won’t not allow for a detour during the work, Knights said.

Commissioner Joe Wiest said although the construction could be inconvenient to people traversing that intersection, the realignment will be worth the pain.

“The intensity of it is pretty high, but what an improvement it’ll make for this township,” Wiest said. “This project has needed to be done for a long time, and I’m proud to say Butler Township is stepping up and dealing with it.”

Commissioners also voted Monday to survey seven parcels of land owned by the township. Gateway Engineers will survey the parcels, which vary in size and area, according to Knights.

The parcels are on West Metzger Avenue, the intersection of Butler Road and Weir Avenue, South Eberhart Road, Havenhill Drive and Deer Run Drive.
