A Pittsburgh meteorologist predicts the snow will stick around in Butler County over the weekend with below-freezing temperatures to come Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures in the 40s, however, are planned to sweep in by Monday, meteorologist Bill Modzelewski said, taking the snow with it by Tuesday.

Modzelewski, of the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh, estimated county residents saw 1 to 2 inches when they woke up Friday, saying the flurries first started around midnight. That snow was set to continue Saturday night, bringing another 1 to 3 inches in Butler County, he said.

Those inches will accumulate on the roads and not clear easily, Modzelewski said, as low temperatures have prevailed the past few days.

Again Saturday, the temperature won’t venture very high, allowing that snow to settle firmly into place.

“Even into (Saturday), it’s a high around 18 degrees,” he said.

School districts in Butler County closed or moved to online learning in answer to the snow covered road conditions on Friday, and plow trucks were seen passing roads multiple times in an effort to clear them Friday morning.

“It’s mostly the colder temperatures. Several days of cold weather cooled down the surface temperatures,” he said.

Friday morning’s temperature clocked in at 21 degrees, and was only expected to rise into the mid-20 degree range, he said.
