2 taken to hospital for injuries after Route 68 crash Wednesday

A crash near a Route 68 intersection in Forward Township sent two people to the hospital for minor injuries Wednesday, Feb. 14, according to state police.

The four-car crash occurred at 7:36 a.m. near Evans City Road’s intersection with Old Route 68, documents showed.

Police said Nathan W. Baker, 18, of Zelienople, and a passenger were traveling north on Route 68 when Baker rear-ended a Kia Sportage driven by Daniel E. Engels, 47, of Zelienople. Traffic had slowed while Engels and others waited for a vehicle to turn on to Old Route 68, documents showed.

After the initial collision, police said Baker’s vehicle spun into the other lane and struck a Chevrolet Cruze driven by Cain L. Papanu, 28, of Butler. A Subaru Forester driven by Jordan P. Barley, 28, of Zelienople, was also hit by Baker’s vehicle, according to police on Thursday.

Engels and Papanu were taken from the scene by Harmony EMS ambulances for minor injuries, police said. According to the crash report, Engels and Papanu were taken to area hospitals.

Route 68 was closed while crews worked on scene. The road was reopened at 8:55 a.m., according to police.

Callery Volunteer Fire Company and Evans City Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
