Karns City high alumnus dies in Valentine’s Day crash

Nicholas A. Ganter, 29, of Apollo, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 14, after his truck collided with a guide rail in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County.

Ganter graduated from Karns City Area Jr./Sr. High School in 2013.

According to a report from the Westmoreland County coroner, Ganter was traveling eastbound in a Chevrolet pickup truck on Melwood Road at around 3:22 p.m. Wednesday.

The truck left the right side of the road before crossing through both lanes of traffic before crashing into a guide rail and a tree on the left side of the road, the report said.

Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Russell A. Morgan pronounced Ganter dead at the scene at 4:56 p.m. Ganter was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, and the air bags of the vehicle deployed. The coroner’s office said Ganter's death was caused by blunt force trauma.
