MIDDLESEX TWP — After two months of deliberation, supervisors voted Wednesday, Feb. 21 to contribute $30,000 to its emergency medical service provider, Quality EMS.

The motion also officially retains Quality EMS as the emergency medical services provider for Middlesex Township for 2024.

In addition to Middlesex Township, Quality EMS serves Mars, Adams Township, Valencia, Callery and part of Forward Township.

Adams Township’s supervisors made a similar pledge for 2024. In December, they voted to set aside $125,000 for contributions to Quality EMS over the 2024 fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Forward Township has pledged roughly $8,000 from Local Service Tax revenue, while Callery will pitch in $3,000.

In January, the motion came before the supervisors, who voted to table it for later. At the time, township manager Jeffrey Winkle said that the board wanted to wait and see how much the other municipalities in Quality EMS’s coverage area would chip in.

“The board wanted time to review the information,” Winkle said. “The board has reviewed it and they’re comfortable with the appointment.”

Quality EMS executive director Conrad Pfeifer, who is also a Middlesex Township police officer, was present at the meeting Wednesday night. According to Pfeifer, Quality responded to 190 calls over the past month, 38 in Middlesex.

At an earlier meeting, Pfeifer estimated that Quality EMS would require $600,000 of funding per year over the next three years to cover the costs of increasing wages and other operational expenses.

According to Pfeifer, Quality EMS is fully staffed, with 13 medics, 13 EMTs and five ambulances — three running four days a week, and the other two running 24/7.

Like other nonprofit EMS services in Butler County, Quality EMS also offers a subscription that allows residents to receive discounted rates on transport whenever they receive it.
