A small school bus and a tri-axle truck were struck by a falling tree on Route 8 in Brady Township on Wednesday morning, April 3, according to officials.

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Route 8 near Prospect Road, according to Nathan Wulff, assistant chief of Unionville Volunteer Fire Company.

“The tree fell across the road, and then simultaneously, a school bus and tri-axle hit it, coming in opposite directions,” he said.

Wulff said both vehicles were able to stay in their lanes during the collision.

“The tree broke apart when the tri-axle hit it and dragged (part of the tree) 100 feet down the road,” he said.

The bus was traveling north at the time of the crash and was not carrying any students, Wulff said.

According to Alfonso Angelucci, superintendent of Slippery Rock Area School District, the bus was en route to pick up high school and middle school students.

The bus driver and a bus monitor were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for minor injuries suffered in the crash, he said. The crash caused delays for commuters and three other Slippery Rock school buses that use that stretch of Route 8.

Angelucci said around 8:50 a.m. that some buses had not yet arrived at the school due to delays.

Crews remained on scene as branches were cut away from some wires that were affected.

State police, Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team and Butler Ambulance Service were among those responding to the scene.
