Cowen

Mercedes L. Cowen, 87, of West Sunbury, passed away the morning of Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Sunnyview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Mercedes was born on Aug. 28, 1936 in Pittsburgh, as the daughter of the late George M. and Elizabeth (Wadowsky) Heinzl.

She worked at Slippery Rock High School for 14 years in food service and also the Salvation Army for 12 years. Mercedes enjoyed her wine and looked forward to the fall, to be able to blow the leaves in her yard.

Mercedes is survived by one son, Darin Cowen (Michelle Kohlmeyer) of Hilliards; one son-in-law, Mark (Carol) Prokay of West Sunbury; two daughters-in-law, Beverly Cowen of Butler and Kathy Hempfling of Slippery Rock; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons. She is also survived by one sister, Betty Frobe of Florida; one brother, George M. Heinzl of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter; two sons; and one grandson.

COWEN — Family and friends of Mercedes L. Cowen, who died Thursday, April 4, 2024, will be received for visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at WILLIAM F. YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 132 Main St., West Sunbury. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 6 p.m.

Interment will be private.
